Get better soon Shane and Simon from everyone at Velo29 Cycling Team.

Last weekend saw the 2nd of the 5 event Kilo To Go sportive events that Velo29 are supporting. Somewhat further afield than the previous excursion, the crew of four headed off to Bodmin in Cornwall! We may not have seen the Beast of Bodmin, but we did see over 1000 cyclists tackling some of the hardest climbs in the area… and some of the bikes being were a long way short of the top end carbon steads that we expect at these events! Once again the Velo29 mechanics saved the day by getting people back on the road when they’d all but given up hope… does anyone else remember Bicycle Repair Man?

Thanks once again to Hunter and Guymer for their invaluable support!

Team sponsor Velo29 is proud to announce that they are the official rider support for this year’s 5 ride series of Kilo To Go cyclo sportive events.

The Kilo To Go series started on the 29th March in Cheshire and is organised by experienced event promoter Geoff Saxon and his team.

Velo29 will be providing rider support in the form of pre-ride bike checks from our team of 4 mechanics. During the race our support vehicle will be driving round the course fixing punctures, mending broken chains and dealing with the plethora of mechanical issues that always occur during epic rides!

Our trade / demo stand will be on display during the events where we’ll have a selection of our brands on show and also a few items for sales such as tyres, tubes, cleats, chains and anything else that might be required in a pre-ride emergency!

Further info can be found at www.kilotogo.com.

Sunday 15th March saw Velo29’s 2nd road race of the year and another top performance by the team. 3 of the riders made the journey to the Morpeth area for the Wansbeck CC Aussie Pursuit.

Mike Guymer and Chris Woods were in fine form for the opening laps despite strong efforts from other local teams. The Elite riders were unable to eat into the handicap given to the 3rd cat Woods / Guymer group.

Fine weather made for excellent racing and the first 3 laps were completed at a very high pace. Woods and Guymer were never far from the action, both contributing some big turns at the front of the race.

Dan Smith, starting in the Elite group was showing good form again. Looking for a repeat of his impressive win at the Neil White memorial Dan was working hard from the gun. As is usually the case for this race, the handicapping was generous and the Elite riders had their work cut out. However, due to the Premier calendar race being cancelled, some of the country’s top riders had made the trip to the North East, hence the field was an impressive one.

With only 8 miles to race it looked like a rare coup could be on the cards; the Woods/ Guymer group had a 30 second advantage over the Elite riders. However, with some of Britain’s top riders in the chasing group the race came together with just 5 miles to go.

Despite 90 minutes of hard work, Woods and Guymer found the legs for a last dig, gaining a small gap over the speeding peleton for a brief time before being swallowed up by the chasing riders.

Dan Smith had made big efforts to break away on the final lap, however after his previous win was a marked man and was unable to gain the same advantage that saw him cross the line alone 2 weeks ago.

The riders turned the final corner altogether and began the long sprint to the finish line. As they came into view, the distinctive figure of Dan Smith could be seen very near the front of the group. The pace gathered as the riders worked for position, spread across the road, elbow to elbow as they sprinted for the line.

Without an out-and-out Sprinter in the team, a win was unlikely and as Matthew Kippling romped across the line for his first win of the season, Dan Smith came home in an impressive 6th place.

Guymer and Woods crossed the line in the Peleton, both exhausted after a very impressive morning’s racing. Only 2 races into the season and Velo29 has seen some very promising performances from our riders. Spirits were high in the team car on the journey home, this has all the making of a brilliant first season!

Next weekend sees a return to the Seamer circuit and a return to the start line for Mike Coward, back from his training camp in Majorca. The competition will be stiff but Velo29 will be looking for another good result. Check back here next Monday for a full race report.
