Velo29 Development Team

Chris Wood
Marton

Chris is a relative newcomer to the racing scene but has already shown big promise in the last two seasons. He is a strong climber and excellent over long distances.  Chris will be working hard this year to hone his racing skills and develop his turn of speed.

We aim to see Chris on the podium by the end of the year and Velo29 will be behind him 100% to achieve this.

Mike Guymer
Redcar

Mike is a well established North East rider having been an ever present face in the local peloton for the last 2 decades. As one of our more senior riders Mike will be representing Velo29 in all the local races including road, track and cyclo cross. Mike will this year target the North East Division Road Championships and also the Croft evening series.

With years of experience Mike is ready to step up a level and now with the support of Velo29, 2012 promises to be Mike’s best season yet.

Mike Smart
Ingleby Barwick

Mike is the younger brother of a rider who once claimed 6th place in a Premier Calendar event, so clearly he has some potential in his genes. If Mike works hard he could earn himself a place in the Velo29 National Team. Time will tell where this rider will go.

Martin Axon
Marton

Martin joined Velo29 for the start of the 2011 season. Martin is aiming to progress with the Development Team and to see what he is capable of on the road. 2012 will see more help provided by Velo29 for his development and specifically his training.

Velo29 Rider, Velo29 Cycling Team

Michael Coward
Guisborough

A recent entry to the British road scene, Mike is an established mountain biker and one of our most promising development squad riders. Mike is 100% committed to his cycling and as part of the Velo29 squad should really start to progress through the ranks of UK cycling.

Mike will be focusing mainly on the MTB scene in 2012.

Andy Leon
Guisborough

Andy has converted to cycling after injury prevented him from taking part in the fell running that he’d been doing for many years. Despite not having been a serious cyclist in the past, Andy is a natural athlete and his talent shines through on the bike. Andy is a highly active member of the club and will be racing locally for Velo29.

Levi Lawrence
Guisborough

Levi joined the Velo29 Cycling Team in 2011 whilst looking to improve on his triathlon performance. But I think it’s fair to say that Levi has got the bug and is determined to push himself on with his cycling.

Still only young and relatively new to the sport, Levi will be looking to learn from his older more experienced teammates during his time with Velo29.

Youth / Junior Team

Charlie Tanfield
Great Ayton

Charlie is the youngest but already one of the most experienced riders in the Velo29 squad (from both development and national team riders).  Charlie has been a youth National Champion and performs with the best in the country on both track and road.

Charlie has already shown that he can compete comfortably with the best Senior riders in the North East having already had podium placings in criteriums.

With the support of his family and Velo29 Charlie clearly has a long and prosperous career ahead of him.

Alex Hopper
Moorsholm

Alex joined the Velo29 Cycling Team in 2010 having trained with the team throughout the winter of 2009/10. Alex has progressed massively throughout 2011 and will undoubtedly perform with the best in the country as a Junior in 2012.

Alex has the sort of build that has seen him develop into an excellent road rider; definitely one to watch out for in the near future.

Taylor Cardus
Darlington

A promising young sprinter who rides well on the track and road.

Taylor is a regular at Manchester Velodrome as well as on the North East road scene. Some impressive results on the Track have seen him promoted to the Manchester Premier Division Track League.

Taylor is looking to make progress on the road in 2012 with a view to joining the National Team in years to come.
